Yogurt is often considered a healthy food for people. However, it may present
health risks for the patients with Kidney Disease. Therefore, the patients had
better eliminate yogurt from their daily diet.
Kidneys are important organs responsible for filtering blood and discharging
metabolic wastes and excess fluid by producing urine. However, in Kidney
Disease, the kidneys are impaired. As a result, they can not function at their
fullest potential and can not regulate phosphorus levels in blood. In this case,
the high phosphorus levels can decrease the level of calcium in blood, which
increases the risk for bone disease.
Yogurt is not only rich in phosphorous, but rich in protein. High-protein
foods break down into wastes like nitrogen and creatinine. What’s worse, as the
diseased kidneys can not remove the metabolic products totally thus building up
in blood, it will certainly cause other health problems.
In addition, yogurt is abundant of calcium. If the patients with Kidney
Disease keep a high consumption of yogurt, it will increase the risk of
developing kidney stones. Drinking water is a good method for preventing kidney
stone. However, for the patients with Kidney Disease, especially with severe
kidney damage, they should limit their fluid intake.
Yogurt is certainly not along in its potential threat to diseased kidneys.
The patients with Kidney Disease should also reduce similar high-protein dairy
products like milk, cheese etc and other high phosphorus foods such as oranges,
banana, potato, peach etc.
If the patients with Kidney Disease can follow strict dietary principles, it
will slow down the disease progression greatly. As there foods structures are
different in different countries and areas, the patients should follow different
dietary principles. More detailed information on diet principles, please consult
