All the children should have the same right to enjoy their childhood and live
a healthy and happy life. However, sometimes, the fate is unfair. Many children
have to endure the torments of disease. Especially for those with Chronic Renal Failure, its severe complications do so enormous harm to them.
Renal osteodystrophy
The impaired phosphate excretion results in an elevation of serum phosphate
and a drop in calcium thus stimulating the development of renal osteodystrophy.
Also the impaired formation of active metabolites of vitamin D results in
malabsorption of calcium across the intestinal tract. In addition, the children
with Chronic Renal Failure have a skeletal hormone resistance which can
contribute to the development of renal osteodystrophy.
Growth failure
The majority of children who have Chronic Renal Failure suffer from
significant growth retardation. Among the children with the disease, their
tissues have resistance to endogenous and exogenous growth hormone. Moreover,
the growth hormone receptor is also inhibited by the disease.
Anemia
When renal function falls below 15% of normal, anemia appears with increasing
frequency in Children with Chronic Renal Failure. There are multiple factors
attributing to the anemia in children.
* Decreased erythropoiesis
* Shortened red blood cells survival
* Excessive blood losses
* Iron and folic acid deficiency
Frequent infection
For the children with Chronic Renal Failure, they suffer from impaired
immunological defense and delayed wound healing, which can give rise to a higher
incidence of infection in children.
Other complications
A progressive encephalopathy, seizures,ataxia, chorea, duodenal ulcers and
sexual dysfunction have been noticed in the children who have Chronic Renal
Failure.
