Complications of Chronic Renal Failure

Chronic Renal Failure is a progressive disease. With the decline in renal function, less and less wastes are excreted by the kidneys, which can affect many body systems thus resulting in a series of complications.

Bone disease

The patients with Chronic Renal Failure often have disordered vitamin D metabolism which can cause poor absorption of calcium from daily diet. Also some patients are accompanied by hyperparathyroidism and more parathyroid hormone is produced, which can leach calcium from bone. Therefore, the patients with Chronic Renal Failure often have osteoporosis and other bone problems.

Respiratory effects

Some patients with Chronic Renal Failure may have shortness of breath, increased respiratory rate and depth, which are caused by pulmonary swelling, CHF and acidosis.

Cardiovascular diseases

In Chronic Renal Failure, the kidneys can not discharge excess fluid normally thus leading to fluid retention. Also the high blood pressure and retention are aggravated by vessels remodeling from renin-angiotensin-aldosterone effects. Therefore, the retention and high blood pressure will certainly put much more burden on cardiovascular system. In severe case, it may lead to CHF and Cardiac arrest risk that can threaten their life.

Anemia

Anemia is a common complication of Chronic Renal Failure. As the kidneys are damaged seriously, the kidneys are not able to produce hemopoietin. Moreover, the patients with Chronic Renal Failure often have poor appetite, nausea and vomiting, it can reduce the raw materials of blood resulting in anemia.

Gastrointestinal diseases

For the building up of metabolic wastes in blood, the patients with Chronic Renal Failure often have peptic ulcer disease and gastrointestinal disease. Therefore, the patients often have nausea, vomiting and poor appetite. These gastrointestinal problems can affect the intake of nutrients, which is not beneficial to the recovery of the patients.

Skin disease

Skin itch, dry skin and change in skin color are common among the patients with Chronic Renal Failure. In Chronic Renal Failure, increased pigment is excreted through skin causing a sickly tan color. Moreover, a lot of uremic toxins will ooze from the skin leading uremic forest on skin.

The above complications of Chronic Renal Failure mainly occur in the advanced stage. If you can receive proper treatment as early as possible, you will be able to avoid the above complications and live a normal live as healthy people.
