Arabica coffee has a long history in Arab States and it can go back to the
ancient time. Arabica coffee is a high quality and healthy drink and it can
lower the risk of developing colon cancer, gout, Parkinson's disease. However,
for the local patients with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), they should limit
the coffee consumption strictly.
Firstly, caffeine in Arabica coffee has a bad influence on high blood
pressure.
High blood pressure is a very common complication of PKD. Caffeine can affect
the secretion of renin which can regulate blood thus resulting in a sharp rise
in blood pressure. In addition, the caffeine can stimulate the adrenal gland to
produce more epinephrine, which can arouse blood pressure to elevate.
Secondly, coffee can cause the cysts to enlarge.
In PKD, the tubule cell proliferation and the cystic fluid accumulation
result in the increasing in number and size of cysts, which can cause the
enlargement of kidneys. The adenosine 3': 5'-monophosphate (cAMP) in coffee can
accelerate the above mechanisms of cysts expansion.
Thirdly, the minerals in coffee can cause renal injury.
Coffee is rich in potassium. However, in PKD, if the patients suffer from
renal insufficiency, their kidneys can not achieve their fullest potential. As a
result, the potassium will accumulate in body. If the potassium level is too
high, it may cause heart enlargement, arrhythmia and even cause death.
Therefore, the patients in Arab States should limit the Arabica coffee
consumption in their daily diet. However, it means that they should avoid
drinking coffee completely. If you want to know how much coffee you can drink or
how much minerals like potassium, phosphorus etc you should consume or other
diet of PKD, you can consult us on line.
