Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) is an autoimmune disorder
which affects the filters in kidneys. Although the prognosis of MPGN is good, it
is quite pone to progress into Renal Failure if the patients can not get proper
treatment in time. After many years' research, a new therapy—immunotherapy is
applied successfully in treating kidney disease.
How does MPGN occur?
Our human body has a powerful immune system which can prevent the harmful
substance invading into body by producing antibodies. However, in some cases,
the immune system can not function well. As a result, the antibodies fail to
defeat the harmful substances known as antigens. As a result, the antibodies and
antigens form immune complexes to lodge in the kidney, which can cause
inflammation and damage to the kidney itself.
How to treat MPGN?
Immunotherapy is a kind of biotherapy. It plays the following roles in
treating MPGN.
1. It can inhibit the inflammation immediately by using a series of
immunosuppressive agents with low side effects. In this way, it can stop further
damage to kidneys effectively.
2. Immune complexes are outside pathological substances. Therefore, it is not
possible for them to exist in kidneys for too long. Immunotherapy can clear up
the immune complexes in blood and degrade the immune deposits in kidneys
completely.
3. The underlying cause of MPGN is autoimmune dysfunction. Immunotherapy can
stimulate the body to produce normal immune cells to rebuild the immune system.
Hence, it can prevent the relapse of MPGN completely.
What is achievable using immunotherapy?
Eliminate symptoms like proteinuria, hematuria, swelling, high creatinine
level etc.
Improve renal function by repairing glomeruli.
Rebuild immune system.
After the above systemic treatment, the patients with MPGN will have overall
health improvement and avoid developing Renal Failure.
