Do I Need to Treat the Multiple Cysts on Kidneys

Q: Some time ago, I was inspected to have multiple cysts on my kidneys when I take physical examination. I do not have any symptoms at all. Should I receive treatment at once?

A: Primarily, you should know what diseases cause multiple cysts on your kidneys. In clinic, multiple cysts are attributable to Simple Kidney Cysts or Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD).

Simple Kidney Cysts are very common, especially among the elderly above 50 years old. If the cysts are small (below 3 cm) and you do not have any discomforts or symptoms, you need not receive treatment temporarily. You should take B-ultrasound test once in every three months to observe if the cysts are growing or have the tendency of canceration. If the cysts keep enlarging very rapidly, you should receive treatment at once.

PKD is a genetic kidney disorder, in which multiple cysts growing on kidneys. With age, the cysts will enlarge gradually and replace more and more healthy nephrons. More than 50% of the patients with PKD will develop Renal Failure by age 60. As there is no cure for PKD, what the patients can do is to stop the cysts growth to prevent kidney damage through proper treatment.
