Many patients with Diabetes Mellitus may be annoyed with the sweet taste in
mouth after waking in the morning or a meal. They try every method to eliminate
the troublesome taste such as drinking a large amount of water, but it is no
useful at all. So, what is the cause of this problem? Is it related to other
diseases?
Actually, sweet tastes in mouth mainly attribute to two causes.
1. Digestive system disorder
Many patients with Diabetes Mellitus are usually companied by digestive
system disorder which can cause more ptyalin to be secreted. Ptyalin is
responsible for converting starch in foods into maltose. When the ptyalin is
high, the starch will be converted into maltose at a very fast speed. As the
maltose tastes sweet, the patients will feel sweet in mouth. Under this
condition, the patients usually feel thirsty and may have constipation and poor
appetite and fatigue etc.
2. High blood glucose level
The amount of glucose in spittle rises up with the increasing of blood
glucose level. Therefore, if the blood glucose level is high, it is very likely
to cause sweet tastes in mouth.
3. Some medicines they take may also cause sweet taste in mouth. Some
medicines can affect the taste sense and smell sense directly and some can
reduce the secretion of spittle thus providing a favorable environment for the
breeding of germ in mouth thus resulting in bad smell in mouth.
The above are the common causes of bad tastes and smell in patients with
Diabetes. If you are troubled by other problems such as blurred vision,
fluctuating blood glucose level etc, you can consult our experts to get relative
professional suggestions.
