Best diet for patients with Henoch-Schonlein Purpura Nephritis

Best diet for patients with Henoch-Schonlein Purpura Nephritis

The reasonable diet for patients with HSPN should be delicate and full of nutritions, which is easy to be digested and absorbed, reducing the gastrointestinal burden. The food for patients with HSPN should be processed accurately instead of low-diet or crude fibre food, such as celery, rape, bamboo shoot, fragrant-flowered garlic and pineapple, which will hurt gastrointestinal mucosa, inducing or aggravating gastrointestinal haemorrhage. Then, what should patients with HSPN pay attention to in daily life as well?

The intake of protein: the intake of protein should be reasonable, as well as high protein. The continual decrease of plasma protein will induce infection easily, which will let edema relapse, aggravating patients’ condition. By contrast, high protein diet is one of reasons which cause high filtration of glomerulis, improving the speed of glomerulosclerosis gradually. Therefore, the intake of proteins should be in harmony with patients’ condition. Proteins with high quality are the best choice.

The intake of salt: there is no limit for HSPN patients without edema and hypertension. By contrast, patients with edema and hypertension should be limited to the intake of salt because too much salt will aggravate water-sodium retention, leading to more serious edema and much higher blood pressure.

The intake of water: the limit of water is unnecessary for patients without oliguria and edema. As for patients with edema, the intake of water should be in harmony with the volume of urine and degree of edema. In general, if the edema is obvious, the intake of water should be limited to 500~800ml/d. If patients are accompanied with urinary tract infection, water should be taken in more so as to avoid or reduce the remaining and breeding bacteria.

Besides, is it a good choice for patients with HSPN to enjoy fish, shrimp, egg or meat? These kinds of food, such as fish and shrimp, are full of high quality proteins. Fish and shrimp are beneficial to patients with HSPN, except some patients who are allergic to fish and shrimp or carry with some hypersensitivity diseases, such as Anaphylactoid Purpura, and Purpura Nephritis. But, the intake of protein should be in harmony with patient’s condition.
