Although a healthy diet plan can not cure IgA Nephropathy, it can slow down
its progression. Therefore, it is very important to keep a proper diet plan for
the patients.
☆ Omega-3 fatty acid can reduce the inflammation in kidneys thus stopping
more damage to kidneys. Fish oil is abundant of omega-3 so it is generally
recommended to people with IgA Nephropathy.
☆ Vitamin E can reduce the protein in urine. Therefore, the patients should
increase the foods high in vitamin E in their daily diet such as green leaf
vegetables.
☆ As many people with IgA Nephropathy are companied by high blood pressure
and swelling. If they take excess sodium, it will cause retention of fluid and
sodium thus aggravating the conditions. Therefore, the patients should restrict
salt intake to 2~3 grams per day.
☆ If the kidneys can not filter potassium, it will cause hyperkalemia. High
serum potassium level can affect the function of heart and even lead to serious
heart failure. The common foods high in potassium mainly include oranges,
bananas, peaches, potatoes, nuts, lentils etc.
☆ Keep a low-protein diet
High protein intake can not relieve proteinuria, but can aggravate the
progression of the disease. Therefore, it is very essential to limit protein
intake. From stage 1 Chronic Kidney Disease to stage 4, the protein intake
should be restricted to 0.6~0.75g/kg per body weight. If the patients are on
hemodialysis, they should keep the protein intake within 1.2 g/kg per body
weight. For the patients on peritoneal dialysis, they are recommended to keep
the 1.2~1.3g/kg per body weight.
☆ Keep a low-fat diet
In many cases, the patients are accompanied by high cholesterol, which may
cause hyperlipidaemia. If the lipid level is too high, the patients are at risk
of developing heart disease and other vascular diseases. Therefore, it is very
essential for them to cut some fat from their daily diet.
Besides the above dietary suggestions, the patients should also limit the
intake of fluid, phosphorus etc. If you want to get a personalized diet plan,
